The Damariscotta Montessori School project is an addition and substantial renovation project to a historic farmhouse. The 7,000 square foot addition was made to look like a barn for a few reasons. First it fits within the context of the neighborhood and surroundings while acknowledges the history of the original use and structure. Second, as a compliment to the progressive education concepts of Maria Montessori it allows for a more loose interpretation of what is a school. Third, the large mass volume of the structure allowed for modern mechanical HVAC systems and an elevator, not to mention the place is flooded by generous light due to large expanses of glazing.
