Early in 2012 I was approached by a local not-for-profit organization, the Twin Villages Alliance, and asked to come up with a design for a welcome sign that linked the two villages of Newcastle and Damariscotta. It was explained to me that “the sign should embody a certain sense of gravitas.”
Starting with a palette of locally sourced granite, the gravitas of the sign was reinforced by bold proportions and solid detailing. The poetic concept tying the materials together reflects unique aspect of the community for which it greets you. The two granite pillars supporting a steel beam represent the two towns, Newcastle and Damariscotta. The steel beam is fastened a top by large stainless steel bolts with a purposeful gap between the stone and steel to present a sense of lightness, the floating arched steel member represents the bridge connecting the two towns.
