The Island Cottage is built on a remote island at the end of the South Bristol peninsula. Accessed only by boat, the project presented many obstacles. The property is one that has been enjoyed by one family for nearly a century. It was the replacement to the original structure that burned to the ground just as it was in the final stages of a renovation process. 44 North was awarded the commission to replace what was. The original cottage was one that housed the many memories shared by one family over the course of generations, and it became clear that the new one must both acknowledge the history of what was but allow for the future. Along with the tough logistics of construction, the exposure of the building to the elements, salt-laden air, gale force storms and wind driven rain all posed unique challenges.
